Andrew Burn, a freelance historical bassoonist based in Basel, Switzerland, presents a session on interpreting music of the high Baroque with a focus on 17th and 18th century instrumental practices of liberal ornamentation, recomposition, and adding improvisatory movements in performance. He will draw on contemporary sources, including writings of Johann Joachim Quantz and Francesco Geminiani, along with extant examples of transcribed improvisations. Through building awareness of the building blocks of early 18th century improvisation & composition, this session will help reframe our collective view of this repertoire as living, malleable works which exist in performance rather than as documents which detail a clear, specific intention that we must recreate.
