Jeffrey Lyman: Radical Mid-Century Modernists: Four Women Who Reset the Standards at the Paris Concours

Since the first bassoon concours was held at the Paris Conservatoire in 1797, only four women have been commissioned to compose works for this event. However, those four women composed some of the most challenging and ground breaking works for our instrument and were the first to adopt serial languages, extended techniques and chance notation. This recital presents five morceaux de concours by Odette Gartenlaub, Ida Gotkovsky, Ginette Keller and Marie-Véra Maixandeau and will highlight how each of the pieces expanded the expressive and technical demands of this competition.
